Edibles at Bud Barn: Gummies, Chocolates and Drinks Explained

Edibles are one of the fastest-growing categories at Bud Barn, and one of the most questions-per-visit too. If you’re shopping for edibles in Winchendon, here’s a plain-English guide to the formats on our shelves, how they’re labeled in Massachusetts and how to pick one that fits what you’re after.

How edibles are dosed in Massachusetts

Edibles in Massachusetts are made in standard servings, which makes comparing them easy:

  • 5mg of THC is a standard serving. One gummy, one square of chocolate or one marked portion of a drink is usually 5mg. Some products come in smaller 2.5mg pieces for an even lighter serving.
  • Most packages hold 100mg. That’s 20 servings of 5mg, the most common size on our shelves.
  • Clear labels. Every package lists the THC per serving, the total per package, the ingredients and the date. Drink mixes and tinctures are measured differently, so always check the per-serving amount on the label.

So when you see “100mg” on a bag of gummies, that usually means 20 gummies at 5mg each.

Start low, go slow

Edibles work differently from smoking or vaping. They can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to kick in, and they last longer. The most common mistake is taking more because “nothing’s happening yet.”

If you’re new to edibles, the standard advice is simple: start with one serving or less, wait at least two hours before having more, and don’t mix with alcohol. Many gummies and chocolates are easy to cut in half if you want to go smaller.

Gummies

Gummies are by far our most popular edible. They come in a wide range of flavors, every piece is a single portion, so dosing is easy, and they keep well. Good News, Kanha, Incredibles and Zzzonked are customer favorites, and some gummies also include CBD or other cannabinoids alongside THC, listed on the label. Look for “fast-acting” or “nano” on the label if you’d rather not wait as long. They’re a great place to start if you’ve never tried an edible.

Chocolates

Cannabis chocolates, from brands like Kiva, Incredibles and Theory Wellness, come as bars scored into 5mg squares, or as individual pieces. They’re a favorite for people who want something that feels like a treat. Store them somewhere cool so they don’t melt in a warm car.

Drinks

Cannabis drinks, like Hi5 seltzers and sodas in 4-packs, iced teas and flavorless drink mixes you add to your own drink, are a newer option. Many people find they come on a little faster than gummies or chocolates, but everyone’s different. Check the label for the THC per container, since a single can may hold one serving or several.

Mints and tablets

Tablets and mints, like Mycrodose tablets, are small, low-key and precisely dosed. They’re easy to carry, have no sugar rush and are a good fit if you want consistency from one serving to the next.

How to choose your first edible

  • Pick a format you’d enjoy anyway. If you love chocolate, start there.
  • Check the per-serving amount. 5mg is a full serving; half of one is a reasonable first try.
  • Look at the total. A smaller package is a cheaper way to find out what you like.
  • Ask. Our budtenders talk edibles all day and can point out what’s new, what’s popular and what’s on special.

Store them safely

Edibles look like regular candy and snacks, so keep them in their original child-resistant packaging, out of sight and out of reach of kids and pets. A lockbox is a good idea if you have little ones at home.
