Ever noticed two strains with similar THC can feel totally different? One has you sinking into the couch, the other has you tackling your to-do list. THC isn’t the whole story. Terpenes are a big part of the reason.

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are natural compounds that give plants their aroma and flavor: the zest of citrus, the calm of lavender, the fresh scent of pine. Plants likely produce them to help weather tough conditions and keep pests away.

Cannabis has more than 100 terpenes, and each strain’s unique mix shapes its personality. That’s why more growers, labs and shoppers now look at a strain’s terpene profile, not just its THC percentage.

Terpenes to know

  • Myrcene: earthy, musky, mango notes; often linked to a relaxed, mellow feel.
  • Limonene: bright citrus; associated with an uplifted mood.
  • Linalool: floral, like lavender; calm and unwinding.
  • Caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, also found in cloves and black pepper; grounding.
  • Pinene: fresh pine; crisp and clear-headed.
  • Humulene: woody and earthy, also found in hops; often described as energizing.

The “entourage effect”

Terpenes won’t get you high on their own, but many believe they work alongside THC and CBD to shape your experience. This idea is called the entourage effect: cannabis compounds may work better together than any one does alone. It’s one reason some people prefer full-spectrum products.

Research on terpenes is still early, so think of them as a helpful guide, not a guarantee. Your body, experience level, how you consume and your setting all play a role too.

Shopping tips

  • Check the label. Lab-tested products often list the top three terpenes.
  • Trust your nose. Terpenes fade over time, so fragrant flower usually means a fresher product.
  • Ask about vapes. Some vape oils use added terpenes. Our team can tell you what’s in a product.
  • Go low and slow on heat. Lower temperatures help preserve terpene flavor and aroma.
  • Keep notes. Track what you try, its top terpenes and how it made you feel, to find the profiles you love.
